French Rococo is the most decorative language in our catalogue - flowing carved scrollwork, cabriole legs, gilded highlights and, on selected pieces, genuine mother-of-pearl inlay.

The Craft Behind French Rococo

Rococo lives or dies on the quality of its carving and gilding. Both are slow, both are done by hand, and both are the reason a Rococo piece either looks regal or looks cheap.

Scroll & Floral Carving

Flowing scrollwork, acanthus leaves and floral motifs are carved in relief across crests, aprons, legs and frames. The relief is cut deep enough to hold a real shadow, which is what separates hand carving from pressed moulding.

Gold Leaf & Hand Gilding

Gilded highlights are applied by hand over a prepared ground, then gently aged. Gold leaf follows the carved surface rather than sitting on top of it as a flat metallic paint.

Mother-of-Pearl Inlay

On selected pieces, natural mother-of-pearl is cut and set into the surface piece by piece. Every panel is unique, because no two shells share the same iridescence.

Cabriole Legs & Curved Frames

The characteristic S-curve leg is shaped and carved from solid stock. Frames are built on the curve, not bent into shape afterwards.

Carvers work the ornament by hand - a single carved rail can take a full day.

Marquetry & Inlay

Shell and veneer cut, trial-fitted and glued piece by piece, seams measured in millimetres.

Upholstery Stitching

Fabric cut, stitched and stretched; the pattern must align before it goes on the frame.
